School starts Monday, January 7 and several events are slated to occur on Saturday, January 12.  From Kennesaw’s popular book swap to a scavenger hunt with Marietta Tree Keepers, a free concert in Acworth, art receptions and a combined historial society meeting – there seems to be a wealth of events to enjoy.

Kennesaw’s Annual Book, CD & DVD Swap

Kennesaw Parks & Recreation will host its popular Book, CD & DVD Swap at the Ben Robertson Community Center, 2753 Watts Drive in Kennesaw, on Jan. 12 from 8 to 11 a.m. Participants can drop off gently used hardcover or paperback books, music CDs and DVD movies Jan. 10-11 from noon to 8 p.m. and receive a ticket redeemable for the same number of items during “open swap” time on Jan. 12. Books must have their front and back covers intact and be in good condition. CDs and DVDs must be in their original cases and fully operable. Magazines, software, record albums, VHS or cassette tapes, adult content, unauthorized or illegal material will not be accepted. After the event, all unclaimed items will be donated to charitable organizations. This is not a book sale. It is a free media swap. Items will not be available for purchase.

Volunteer assistance is needed during the event with receiving, sorting, counting and bagging items. Volunteers must have the ability to bend, stoop, stand and lift up to 20 pounds. To sign up for a volunteer shift, visit kennesaw-ga.gov/parks-and-recreation and click on “Volunteers.”

January Scavenger Hunt – Tree Planting Event

Marietta Tree Keepers invites volunteers of all ages to help plant trees in Marietta meeting at the City of Marietta Maintenance Building (near Lewis Park) on Saturday, January 12.  Sign in is 9:00am and planting will run from 9:30-11:30 am.  This planting will be a scavenger hunt where the volunteers will be given clues to find the trees that they will plant.  Tools and refreshments provided. Dress for outdoor weather.

Give back to your community and get some good exercise by coming out and joining us for our January Scavenger Hunt – Tree Planting.  We will be planting trees around Marietta and will meet at City of Marietta Maintenance Building (near Lewis Park) in Marietta.  The address is: 434 Sessions Street, Marietta, Georgia 30060.   The event is free and open to the public of all ages. COMBINED HISTORICAL LECTURE

Acworth and Kennesaw invite you to join them as historian Michael Shaffer presents “In Memory of Self and Comrades” on Saturday, January 12 at 2pm at the Kennesaw Branch of the Cobb County Library system.

Shaffer will share fascinating stories from his new book about Thomas W. Colley who served in one of the most active and famous units of the Civil War.

Shaffer is an historian, author, newspaper columnist. He teaches Civil War courses through Kennesaw State University’s Continuing and Professional Education Center in addition to other locations in the area.  Shaffer is a frequent lecturer and is a member of numerous Civil War Historical Associations. He also serves as president of the River Line Historic Area and president of the Friends of Camp McDonald Park. A book signing and light refreshments will be follow the presentation.

FREE COMMUNITY CONCERT AT 4:00 PM.

The Acworth Cultural Arts Council and the North Cobb High School Foundation is pleased to announce the presentation of a world-class concert, at no charge, for our community. The Lopez-Tabor Concert Duo will perform at 4:00pm on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at Acworth United Methodist Church.

MARIETTA COBB MUSEUM OF ARTS

An opening reception will be held Saturday, January 12, 2018, 6:00 – 8:00PM at the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art featuring the works of Richard Cecil: Creations in Oil and Bronze and Carole Pigott: The Power of Light. Both artists will be in attendance. Opening reception is a benefit of museum membership; membership can be purchased at the eventAll non-members and other guests welcome at $10 per person.
