National Square Dance Convention at Cobb Galleria and more

We know that everyone is getting ready to celebrate our Nation’s birthday next week – fireworks, concerts, parties and more are on the calendar.  In the mean time we are sharing some fun events going on this week.  We just had to promote the National Square Dance Convention as it is the first time it is being held in Georgia and they picked Cobb County!Governor Kemp Proclaims National Square Dance Month

The Cobb Galleria area will host one of the largest recent National Square Dance Conventions®–its first time in Georgia. June 2019 has been proclaimed Square Dance Month in Georgia by Governor Brian Kemp, setting the stage for the convention, June 26-29 at the Cobb Galleria Center and Renaissance Waverly Hotel, just northwest of Atlanta. “Square Dancing, the Official Folk Dance of the State of Georgia, has a long tradition of providing wholesome entertainment for Georgians of all ages who participate in this exciting and friendly activity,” states the proclamation.

The National Convention is expected to draw as many as 6,000 square dancers from across the world. The theme is “Come Dance & Explore Georgia” and will feature 20 tours to introduce attendees to Atlanta and Georgia.

Currently, there are about 50 active square dance clubs in Georgia, each dancing regularly in a community center, school, church or specially constructed dance hall. Dancers dance to recorded music and proceed through intricate sequences of square dance moves, cooperating with others in the 8-person square and prompted by a caller who calls out or sings the next move. Observers are surprised that an evening’s square dance music might include everything from 70s pop music to 50s be-bop to modern country music.

Most clubs have only a few squares of people dancing, but a large square dance like the National Convention will see hundreds of squares on a single dance floor dancing together to one caller. Square Dancing clubs can be found in most major towns and cities in the US, Canada and throughout Germany, Japan, Australia and many other countries, where interestingly, all the calling is done in English. Most clubs sponsor lessons to enable anyone to learn to square dance. Those looking to find a class can email squaredancing7@gmail.com.
