The Adult Spelling Bee

Friday, March 1, 2019 at 7:00 pm will be a night of laughs, some really unusual on-stage antics, and truly funny attempts at spelling difficult words-that’s the “Bee”, a once year event hosted by Communities In Schools Georgia in Marietta/Cobb County. All proceeds benefit our drop out prevention programming.

Remember when you were a kid and you participated in a spelling bee at school? Well, this is nothing like that! It’s all adults, on stage, in costume working together to spell words. The event is hosted by Mark Owens, in game host for the Braves and our judges are Jen Carfagno and Dr. Greg Postel from The Weather Channel. The event takes place at the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre Come out and cheer on your favorite team WSB-TV which includes(Fred Blankenship and Linda Stouffer), Kiwanis Club of Marietta, Marietta Daily Journal, Marietta City Schools, Cobb County Schools, Braves, Legal, Friends of CIS, Artists of the Marietta Square, Cobb Police, Cobb County Librarians.

Mardi Gras Run 5K MARCH 2
Custom finisher medal for first 500 registered runners

The 10th annual Marietta Mardi Gras Run is fast approaching on Saturday, March 2, at the Marietta Square. Participants are urged to sign up at mariettamardigrasrun.com.

The race, hosted by and benefitting the Junior League of Cobb-Marietta, includes a 5K run/walk, 1K fun run and a tot trot for children. The 5K serves as an official qualifier for the 2019 Peachtree Road Race, and the first 500 registered runners will receive a custom finisher medal. Race-day registration will be available.

Along with awards for male and female open and masters winners and the top three finishers in each age group, prizes will also be given for best costume, biggest team, most team spirit and most youth team spirit.

About the Run
The Marietta Mardi Gras Run attracts hundreds of runners and walkers from across metro Atlanta. Proceeds from the race benefit the Junior League of Cobb-Marietta, which supports various non-profit partners throughout Cobb County. Each year JLCM members contribute thousands of volunteer hours, coats, diapers and thousands of dollars in mini-grants to various community organizations that offer critical programs and services to women and children in Cobb County. Smith-Gilbert Gardens to Host Bridal Open House

With the holiday season and Valentine’s Day behind us, left in their wake are a flood of newly engaged couples, no doubt looking for the perfect venue to host their big day. Smith-Gilbert Gardens wants to make that search a bit easier by hosting a bridal open house on Saturday, March 2nd from 11AM-1PM. Couples will have the opportunity to tour the venue, as well as meet with other local vendors from caterers to photographers and more.

This is a drop-in event, but be sure to get there early to ensure adequate time to see the venue and meet the vendors. Admission to this event is free with RSVP and RSVP is required. Please submit your RSVP to Cheri Collins at ccollins@kennesaw-ga.gov.

Repticon Marietta: A Slitherin’, Hissin’, and Hoppin’ Good Time!

Repticon, a recognized leader in hosting reptile and exotic animal expos throughout the United States, is coming to Marietta with an outstanding mixture of vendors, breeders, and educators. This family-oriented, fun-filled event offers guests the opportunity to learn about animals not normally seen in local pet stores. Breeder-vendors are always willing to teach; and, throughout the event, there will be seminars on animal-related topics by experts in the field of herpetology.

Guests can also shop for a new family pet among the hundreds of reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, spiders, and small exotic animals. Repticon Marietta is also the perfect place for them to get merchandise, cages, supplies, and both live and frozen feeders, as well as to get expert advice about caring for their new household member. Many of our vendors allow live interactions with the pets during visits to their booth.

To add to the fun, free-entry raffles are held frequently during both days of the event, offering guests the opportunity to win coveted prizes.

This event, held at the Cobb Civic Center Hudgins Hall, offers a unique family outing suitable for all ages and for a very diverse range of enthusiasts.

The doors open to the general public at 10 a.m. on Saturday, closing at 5 p.m. On Sunday, the show hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. At the door, tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 5-12, and children under 5 are admitted free. GSO Sensory Friendly Concert

The Georgia Symphony Orchestra is delighted to present the fourth annual GSO Sensory Friendly Concert at 2pm on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at the Marietta Performing Arts Center. This event is designed uniquely for sensory sensitive listeners. As a component of the GSO educational and outreach programs, this concert will provide the opportunity to experience great orchestral music in a low pressure environment.

During this 60 minute program, audience members are free to move about, dance, and sing. Sensory sensitive listeners and family members will delight in the discovery of an orchestral experience that invites and welcomes everyone into the world of classical music.  The GSO Chorus will be joining the orchestra in the performance this year, and families can arrive early for the ever-popular instrument petting zoo in the lobby.
