Lanie Shipp Hoover, Obituary

Lanie Shipp Hoover, 72, of Marietta, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2017 as a result of complications from Parkinsonism.

Lanie was a native of Atlanta, graduated from Murphy High School in 1963, attended West Georgia College and the Fashion Institute of Atlanta. She began her career working for Estee Lauder in New York.

After moving to Cobb Co. in 1970, Lanie spent the next four decades dedicated to service in her community through business ownership, leadership, and civic organizations. Lanie was heavily involved in the Kennesaw community in the 70’s and 80’s, serving as president of the Kennesaw Historical Society, becoming a moving force with the Little General Cloggers and the creation of the Lighting of the Way. She was a long time member of Kennesaw Business Association and served as president of KBA in 1986. In 1987 she formed Lanie Shipp and Associates providing public relations for various businesses in the Marietta and Kennesaw areas. During all this time, she was an active member of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce.

In 1997, Lanie began work to form the Town Center Area CID. She served as its Executive Director until her retirement in 2014. Lanie was greatly loved, admired, and respected by her family, friends, and community and leaves a strong legacy of life lived with class and grace through trials and triumphs.

Lanie is predeceased by her parents, Smiley Clifton Hendricks and Mary Ellen Hendricks, her brother Sonny Hendricks, and former spouse Kem Shipp. She is survived by her husband, Ron Hoover, daughter Dori Shipp Smith of Acworth (Brandon), son Skip Shipp of Kennesaw (Casey), stepdaughter Amanda Hoover of Atlanta, sister Margaret Spinks of Stockbridge, brother Bob Hendricks of Johns Creek. Lanie was lovingly known as Hunnie by her seven grandchildren, David Smith, Annie Smith, Claire Smith, Lauryn Shipp, Anderson Shipp, Grady Shipp, and Waylon Shipp. She is also survived by countless friends both long term and recent.

Lanie was a member of Marietta First United Methodist of Marietta and the John Strother Sunday School class. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Marietta First United Methodist church, National Parkinson’s Foundation, or Tranquility Hospice.

A special thanks go to her two special caregivers from Visiting Angels, Lori Antonides and Joanne Moss, who offered Lanie superb and compassionate care.

Arrangements are being handled by Mayes-Ward-Dobbins in Marietta and a memorial service in celebration of Lanie’s life will be Thurs., August 17, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Marietta First United Methodist. A reception will follow.
