MEMORIAL DAY IS A REMINDER

By Derek Easterling, City of Kennesaw Mayor

The month May provides us with a reminder of the cost of our freedom and encourages us to honor all who paid the ultimate price. The freedoms we enjoy should not be taken for granted but rather should be seen as opportunities to progress our nation to overcome oppression and division. Our freedom was purchased with the blood of true Americans:

• Faithful men and women who believed America was worth fighting for;
• Men and women who believed we were indeed one nation under God;
• Men and women who believed we are the greatest nation and can achieve great success in everything we do; and
• They were courageous men and women we called father or son, mother or daughter.

We must honor them by moving forward – we must work together, combining our strengths to create victory.  We must rise above the fray and tolerate nothing but the best from every American. No compromise, only total commitment … we should live our lives in such a manner as to be worthy of their sacrifice.

The American’s Creed
by William Tyler Page

I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed, a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.

I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.

Written 1917, accepted by the United States House of Representatives on April 3, 1918.
