Marietta Soap Box Derby – Saturday, June 8 at 8:30 AM

SAMSUNGThe Marietta Soap Box Derby race, hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Marietta, is an officially sanctioned race of the All-American Soap Box Derby International www.aasbd.org.  This event was started for our youngsters, by Devan Seabaugh in 2004, (he was president of the Kiwanis Club of Marietta at that time). and Devan has been Director of the race ever since.

Racing in any Soap Box Derby takes time and commitment on the part of parents, grandparents, family friends – or whoever is interested enough in kids to step up and lend a helping hand.

SBD Racing is for kids ages 7-17 years of age. The cars are made from kits purchased from the All-American Soap Box Derby International. And the operative word here is “kit”.  Hours are spent assembling, sanding, painting, and getting everything just right.  Workshops are held, bonding family and friends.  As the cars emerge, excitement runs high.

One such workshop was held recently at the home of Tim Lee.  Three Derby cars were being prepared for the race.  Lots of busy hands, helpful hints and strong muscles made the workshop fly by.  Derby cars for Tim’s two grandsons, Connor and Gavin were worked on along with a car for family friend, Gil Stephens.  Gil’s mom, Linda, fitted wheels, while Gil’s sister, Ann Marie was eager to contribute — well at least for a little while.  Tim has been a diligent worker since 2004, contributing many man hours in helping make this event a success.  Devan says, “He is always there, willing to help-a hard worker.” (P.S. – Tim is also the Chairman of Cobb County),

This years Marietta Soap Box Derby will be held on Saturday, June 8 at Marietta High School.  Starting at 8:30 a.m. it is an all day affair – bring a tent, bring the kids, and plenty of water and just maybe your child will race next year..
