60’s theme Open House Party
Peace, Love & Fall Programs! Dust off the bell bottoms and the tie dye and prepare to get G-R-O-O-V-Y at this 60’s-themed open house party. Meet Kennesaw Parks & Recreation program instructors, observe and participate in live demonstrations and learn all about dozens of new and exciting recreation activities that will be offered this fall—from sports, dance and fitness programs to arts & crafts and adult enrichment classes. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their far out attire and try their hand at a variety of FREE activities including a stellar tie dye craft project. Refreshments will be available (while supplies last). It is going to be a psychedelically good time! A discount will be offered for registration accepted on-site during the event. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
Great evening at the Kennesaw Police Department’s National Night Out. Everyone loved the helicopter. Enjoyed a hot dog, and explored the police cars. Councilwoman, Tracey Floyd Viars, greeted the Georgia State Patrol Officers before they lifted off for Jim R Miller Park. NCHS DEDICATES NEW BUILDINGS
NCHS new principal Mathew Moody, along with administration, staff, students, and alumni were on hand to dedicate the new Performing Arts Building and the new Gymnasium (The Arena) on July 31, the day before school opens. Each building is situated on each end of the campus (and yes, it can be a walk from one side to the other). A special treat was the appearance of long time band director, Greg Williams (retired) who spoke about what a wonderful improvement the new Performing Arts Building was compared to what the school had in the past. The 30,600 square foot Performing Arts Center houses a 750 seat auditorium, a 1,590 square foot black box theatre, dressing rooms, and concessions. The Gymnasium accommodates 3,000 people and features an indoor track, varsity basketball and football lockers, showers, a training room, coaches offices, a laundry room and concessions.
“Hummingbird Whisperer” to Visit Smith-Gilbert Gardens
Kennesaw’s Smith-Gilbert Gardens will hold its eighth annual hummingbird banding event on Saturday, September 8 from 8- 11 am, hosted by “Hummingbird Whisperer” Julia Elliott of Bird Watcher Supply Company. Executive Director, Ann Parsons says, “We are so pleased to work with Julia Elliott and Bird Watcher Supply Company to host this annual event. It is fascinating to watch the banding process and discover just how amazing these tiny birds are! This is a great program for the whole family.”
The process of banding, recapture, and recovery provides valuable information about bird history, especially migratory details and the relative abundance of a given bird species from year to year. All the information is recorded and the birds can be tracked across the United States, if they are captured again.
Children will be invited to make hummingbird craft projects in the Rose Garden, enjoy a scavenger hunt, play yard games, and visit the bubble ponds. The banding is a rain or shine event. Visit smithgilbertgardens.com or call 770-919-0248 for complete details.
Off the Leash” Art Show to Benefits Rescue Animals
This fall The Art Station at Big Shanty Park invites artists to display their pet themed work in their second annual Off the Leash Art Show. Art submissions are open to the public and all ready to display pieces from a variety of mediums are welcome. Artists are donating a percentage of sales to benefit local animal rescue group Mostly Mutts. Artists must bring their pieces to The Art Station September 18 -September 21 between 9:30 AM-8:30 PM to be eligible for the show.
The Off the Leash reception will be held in The Art Station gallery on October 4th from 6:00-8:00 PM. Live music, light hors d’oeuvres, a raffle, and a chance to meet some adoptable dogs are a few of the attractions free to the public at this event. The Art Station and Mostly Mutts invite the community to come out and support these artists while helping some of our four-legged friends find a forever home.
Attendees are encouraged to bring wish list supplies or make a small donation to Mostly Mutts. Mostly Mutts’ wish list can be found on their website mostlymutts.org. The public is invited.

Smith-Gilbert Gardens to Host Volunteer Information Meeting
Interested in learning more about how you can volunteer at Smith-Gilbert Gardens? Attend a volunteer information meeting on August 23rd from 6PM-7PM. Hosted at Smith-Gilbert Gardens, you’ll learn about the various ways you can volunteer and how to get started. Light refreshments will be provided.
Smith-Gilbert Gardens’ mission is to serve as a resource for conservation, education and the enjoyment of horticulture, fine arts and historic preservation. Their programs are critical to fulfilling this mission, and can only be offered because of the generous gift of volunteer time and effort.
During this meeting, the Gardens will share information regarding upcoming programs for 2018-19. Many of the tours, classes and events have been around for several years, but some are brand new this year. Even if you can’t be there at the time of the program, if you assist in planning or logistics, you provide a valuable service!

Farmer’s Market & Dinner at the Depot
The Farmer’s Market & Dinner at the Depot are on Monday evenings at the Depot. The season will go until September 24th with no events on the week of July 4th or Labor Day.
The Farmer’s market offers a variety of fresh vegetables & fruits, baked goods, prepared goods, jams & jellies, locally produced honey and more! The market is in the circle this season with the food trucks. Some vendors require cash but many take debit/credit cards. Hours for FM are 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Dinner at the Depot will start at 5:30 pm and go until 8:30 pm. A variety of food trucks will be rotating throughout the season. Food trucks take cash, credit and debit cards.There are tables and chairs for guests on site or they are welcome to bring their own chairs and picnic blankets.
