Kicking-off the month of Mother’s Day and the Kentucky Derby, it’s quite fitting for the May show at dk Gallery to celebrate the art of Susan Easton Burns and Julia Burns who both share a love of equestrian art and life. This year, Susan was the 2015 50th Atlanta Steeplechase artist with her piece titled “Fire”. She also had the privilege of being named the official 140th Kentucky Derby artist in 2014.

As a contemporary artist, Susan Easton Burns’ vibrant work is greatly inspired by LeRoy Neiman as well as Jackson Pollock. Her love for animals and nature has influenced her art with horses being the primary subject matter in her paintings. Early in her career, she began showing her work at small shows around the Atlanta area. She was soon noticed by dk Gallery and was one of the first to join the gallery as a featured artist in 2008.

Julia Burns began working with clay at a young age. Her work is defined by figurative, feelings, and personality. “The paradox of life is much the same as the paradox of ceramics; the clay has a mind of its own and my goal is to collaborate with it, to express one moment. Art has had a
formative role in shaping the direction of my life. Coming from a family of professional artists forced me to be aware the connection between art and life from an early age.”, Julia says.
