Covering The Bases – Sept 14

Horizon Field Fundraiser.

On Friday, September 14th, the Acworth Police Department will kick off its 11th annual Covering the Bases event to benefit Horizon Field and the Horizon League. The festivities begin at 6:30 pm.

Horizon Field, located in the Acworth Sports Complex at the intersection of Main Street and Nance Road, is the only field of its kind in Cobb County. The baseball diamond is made of a special rubberized surface and enables hundreds of athletes with special needs to participate in organized sports every year.

The Horizon League utilizes volunteers from the community who ‘buddy’ with each child needing assistance so that their parents and families can sit on the bleachers and enjoy watching the athletes play. For more than ten years, the field has been a place where families can celebrate victory and hear the roar of the crowd as courageous athletes round the bases. The participants are able to play in the same complex where their siblings may be enrolled in other leagues. Convenience is one aspect of the strategic plan for the location, but the feeling of acceptance and inclusion is a major factor

Over the course of the past decade, the Acworth Police Department has raised over $350,000 for the Horizon Field and League. This year, the festivities will kick off at 6:30 pm with performances from Durham Middle School Band, Barber Middle School Band, Impact Dance, and a Horizon League Kickball Game.

The annual community kickball tournament will begin at approximately 9pm and teams will play late into the night, until a winner claims the trophy.

Covering the bases event is one of the most highly anticipated events of the season, and is the place to be this Friday night. For more information on Covering the Bases, or to donate, please visit www.coveringthebases.org or contact Officer Youlanda McIntosh at 770-974-1232 and get involved.
